One of the most common plants found in the UK to treat wastewater is the activated sludge plant. This treatment plant is primarily made of two major components – a biozone chamber and a settlement chamber.
When it comes to the systems working, the wastewater produced by the property enters the system and goes directly into the biozone. In this area, the air diffuser provides the bacteria with oxygen to keep them alive so that the bacteria can work on breaking down the sludge. The treated sludge then enters the settlement zone where the solids in this effluent settle at the bottom of the tank. After this, they’re redirected to the biozone whereas the treated effluent is released from the system.
Since they have no electrical or mechanical parts inside, they’re a low-cost solution. When it comes to maintenance, you need to get it checked once every six months, however, this also more or less depends on what type and model you have purchased. One downside when it comes to this system is that since the air diffuser runs most of the time, the power consumption may be higher than other systems.
A rotating disc system is a robust type of sewage treatment plant that produces high-quality effluent. Most homes that have a sewage treatment plant installed usually have a rotating disc system making it one of the most recognisable plants in the UK.
This type of plant has a biodisc inside which is a big media disc which houses most of the bacteria, making it similar to a non-electric system. The waste produced from the property enters the primary settlement chamber of the plant where the solids settle at the bottom.
The wastewater then flows into the biodisc where the bacteria live to help further clean the effluent. The solids return to the settlement chamber and the effluent further moves to another biodisc for another round of treatment. After this, the effluent is then discharged out of the tank.
Some of the best rotating disc plants are from Tuke and Bell, Klargester Biodisc and Clearwater Rotoclear. These plants only need to be desludged every 12-18 months and offer minimal noise pollution. However, with the introduction of Whisspurr, this can easily be taken care of.

Another option to consider when looking for different types of sewage treatment plants for your property is the submerged aerated filter system. This type of system usually has three chambers and uses both media and aeration to treat the wastewater.
In a submerged aerated filter treatment plant, the wastewater enters the primary settlement chamber first. The solids settle at the bottom of the chamber after which the effluent flows to the secondary chamber, also known as the biozone. This is where both media and aeration are combined.
The media houses the required bacteria which break down the waste after which it is moved to the third chamber where the sludge is returned to the first settlement and the waste can be further treated.
This type of sewage plant requires a constant power supply for the compressor to run. However, maintenance is easier due to the fewer mechanical or electrical parts.
